ok then. I will continue to believe that the path I outlined not only makes the most sense, but is the most faithful to the text and Paul's theology as a whole. I am unconvinced with your objections.

Paul talks about foreknowledge in the previous chapter.


so when the text says "before they were born" it implies foreknowledge.

So let me make sense of all your posts...

Before they were born, God chose Esau and Jacob for either hell or heaven based on the faith they would express, but it was only for "that moment" and it was subject to alteration if either were to express more or less faith in the future.

That is the case Paul is making here?

Esau didn't have faith, and that moment determined who would carry the lineage, and that would not change No matter what Esau did afterwards.

For he and his lineage would be cut off from the source of salvation which was the Nation of Israel.


Those before the Cross had to look forward to the comming of the promise messiah. Esau didn't have faith therefore he and his lineage was cut off.


Only those of the promise can be saved. Esau can't get to heaven apart from Jesus who is the promise seed.


And it is subject to alteration based on faith in the promise.

For a Calvinist it is not changeable and it is based on God's Omnipotence.


But for me it is changeable and it is based on God's Omniscience.

Well let me put it this way. In God's Eyes it is unchangeable, but from a horizontal perspective it is changeable for we don't know what we will believe or do in the future.


So in short I think Paul was looking at it from a Birds eye view.
